Anonymous asked:
does the solar cross or sun cross have any negative associations?
ms-demeanor answered:
__________________________________________________________Long story short, yes.
Long story long for real it’s literally the symbol used to represent the KKK. Also a sun cross has been used as the symbol for the Norwegian Fascist party during WWII (so, like, when they were trying to be subtle about telling the Nazis that they were totally DTF) and by other fascist groups. That ESPECIALLY nazi-esque flag on the wikipedia page is listed as “knight’s party” flag and just straight redirects to the KKK.
Also there are plenty of pagans who use it and it’s a symbol, like the triskele and the swastika, that have been around forever since humans appear to just like spirals and right angles.
It’s also used by a lot of bands and clothing brands and shit that is going for the 3EDGY5U aesthetic and should be roundly mocked for doing so. That MAY be what’s going on with AFI’s “are we nazis or just neopagans” new imagery.
Anyway, not every band or person or building that has this symbol on it should be immediately dismissed as aggressively white supremacist - some 1000-year-old churches have celtic crosses on them, some pagans have celtic cross tattoos. But it’s still probably best to approach with caution and if you’re a pagan with a celtic cross pendant you’re looking to wear I’d say maybe don’t.
In fact if you’re any variety of pagan I’d say maybe avoid every single thing that shows up on the Anti Defamation League’s Hate Symbol Database. Also in the future if you’re wondering if something is a hate symbol you can search it on the ADL website and it’ll pop right up. (That’s what I did for the second image in this ask).
And also it looks like this ask has come in to @ms-demeanor - most of my discussion of hate symbols is up at @messed-up-metal, which is where this post will be reblogged when I delete it from my main blog, which I try to keep fairly focused on my own work. If you’ve got further questions about white supremacy, white supremacist symbols, or white supremacist dogwhistles any comprehensive discussion I’ve done on that subject will be at @messed-up-metal.
