something
can be unfair even if you have no sympathy for the victim. Like, I
don’t think Varg Vikernes should have been fined 8000 euros for racist
blogging, even though it’s nice to hear that he lost 8000 euros, and
honestly it’d be nice to hear that he got hit by a car.
it’s an important distinction to make!
one can be pissed off at what Saddam Hussein did and pissed off that his “trial” was a total travesty of justice.
getting punished for the wrong reason isn’t getting punished at all, really.

I
mean, it seems like he very clearly violated the anti-hate-speech laws
of France, as well as very clearly violating the laws France has about
holocaust denial. His defense in that trial was “I didn’t write those
posts” on his website that he owned and which had “All writing by Varg
Vikernes” in a banner across the top. He didn’t deny that the posts
violated the law, only that he wrote them, and a court found otherwise.
He chose to move to a country and violate its speech laws; he was
acquitted on charges of planning a terrorist action because it doesn’t
appear that he was planning a terrorist action *that one particular
time* and he’d already served his sentence the theft and storage of
150kg of explosives (and murder and arson) *a different particular
time.*
As an aside, Varg Vikernes is so aggressively racist that his writings violate free speech laws in lots of countries, including the country he was living in when he was fined for violating its law and given a suspended sentence.
His stated problem with Anders Brevik was that he thought Brevik was part of a Jewish conspiracy, not that he murdered sixty kids at a camp. He continues to write on his website that Christianity is a Jewish Conspiracy to subjugate the white race, which is why he does his Odinist heathenry thing.
And he’s an interesting case because there are already acts of violence and arson and hatred that have been directly inspired by him, his words, and his actions. It’s been established that when Vikernes issues a call to action people respond - his sentencing for murder was greeted with arson-as-solidarity.
I mean, I have no sympathy for Varg Vikernes but a suspended sentence and a fine doesn’t actually seem all that unfair for someone who moved to a country and violated its plainly-stated laws.
